The power of the mirror

You often hear of 'the mirror effect' in coaching or psychology - but what does this actually mean? How can you make sense of it for yourself?

The expression, can't see the wood for the trees applies here: it's often really difficult to see inside yourself, or get clear on an aspect of yourself. You are simply too close!

With the mirror, someone else - or a series of people - reflects back to you the behaviour or thing that you need to realise about yourself. Yes, it could be a darker aspect of yourself that you hide from: therefore, recognising it in someone else triggers you. In this case, you can stand back and observe, reflecting, "how do I do this, too?"

People also mirror back to you a lesson your soul wants you to learn, such as valuing and believing in yourself. Through the connection, you may recognise how you have self-abandoned, and played out a self-sabotaging story that you carry in your belief system.

The person, in becoming your mirror, helps you see inside yourself and identify the 'thing' that you are seeking to know and understand.

That is the gift of the mirror: learning about yourself, getting clear on yourself. xx
